The Oceanographic Museum wears a long history and long debates around it. It was built in 1910 by Prince Albert I who had modernized Monaco and gave its glam look. The building of the Museum took 11 years and it was a lot of hard working. It was built from the Cliffside rocks on a height of 85.04 m. The building of the Oceanographic Museum with an impressive façade above the sea makes it unique and special. It is said to have used 100.000 tons of stone from the near by village, La Turbie.

Great variety of fishes, invertebrates and skeletons:

The Museum exhibits 400 species of fishes and 200 families of invertebrates, various species of sea fauna like sharks, crabs, turtles, jellyfish, starfish, crabs, seahorses both stuffed and in skeleton versions. The museum, also, hosts a variety of sea objects like ships, tools, weapons, laboratory figures with experts that analyze the sea. Jean Jacques Cousteau was many years its director beginning in 1957.

Controversial museum:

The Oceanographic museum, also, has been controversial as in 1989, French marine biologist Alexandre Meinesz discovered a patch of a giant tropical seaweed Caulerpa taxifolia under the walls of the museum. This is related to the contamination debate that drained over the years. Still, many ecological measures have been taken to keep the safe environment.
