Savile Row meets Ivy League in Tommy Hilfiger's Fall 2013 Women's collection which mixes collegiate prep with an irreverent take on British sartorial tradition in the spirit of Tommy Nutter, sixties London's go-to tailor. The result gives nod to the era's inspired history -- think Mary Quant, Twiggy and Marianne -- and approaches traditional tailoring with a Mod attitude.
The authentic collegiate wardrobe is given new life through innovative detailing and sartorial precision. Iconic menswear references are reinterpreted in custom fabrics: Prince of Wales check in signature red, white and blue, magnified pin-stripes, and argyle layered over black-and-white houndstooth -- all in a mix of scales. College scarves inspire intricate insets that run over outerwear to create a graphic impact from front to back. Classics receive an unexpected twist: the cable-knit sweater bonded to leather establishes the new twin set, and a sporty pea coat is cut from Steiff fabric. The penny loafer becomes a leather knee-high boot -- the modern co-ed's interpretation of the classic knee-sock. Hemlines are raised with youthful skirts inspired by traditional kilts. Topped with glen plaid fedoras and knit caps, the collection writes the book on a new language of sartorial prep.
