Spring-summer 2014 FASHION UPDATES New designers, latest lines and trends and the names to know now
SISTER BY SIBLING
The London-based label has recently won NEWGEN sponsorship for its playfully cool collections. This season, the brand takes a trip to mid-century suburban America, exploring "the fragile veneer of domestic glamor" - think gingham jacquard, hand-crocheted cotton and prim pastels with a subversive twist.
STUDIO NICHOLSON
Creative Director Nick Wakeman drew heavily on her menswear experience to create the Studio Nicholson aesthetic. Simple shapes, sleek tailoring and understated detailing are at the center of the brand's DNA. This season, early '90s Yohji Yamamoto designs influence the collection, with obi-style belts and deep pleats adding impact.
EDIE PARKER
Inspired by the distinctive bags carried by showgirls and socialites in the '50s and '60s, Edie Parker's trophy clutches are the perfect marriage of wit and glamor. Whether spliced with rainbow stripes, decorated with dazzling glitter or emblazoned with playful slogans, these handmade-in-America designs are destined to make a statement.
CÉDRIC CHARLIER
Following stints at Céline, Lanvin and Cacharel, Belgian talent Cédric Charlier is making waves with his precision cuts and subversively sophisticated designs. For spring, expect utilitarian tailoring punctuated by graphic paneling, sheer organza and bold splashes of orange.
MSGM
Designer Massimo Giorgetti draws inspiration from contemporary art and music to give this Italian-based brand modern-day appeal. The result? A fresh, color-bright collection that is in equal parts stylish, playful and carefree - with a hint of sporty attitude. We love this season's artisanal feather and sequin embellishments and lively tropical prints.
Nº 21
Named after the lucky number and birth date of designer Alessandro Dell'Acqua, No.21 fuses borrowed-from-the-boys tailoring with a feminine sensibility. The label is famed for its refined but unexpected details - think intricate embellishment or cool prints - and counts Diane Kruger and Zoe Saldana as fans.
SERGIO ROSSI
A footwear powerhouse since the '60s, the Sergio Rossi brand is synonymous with elegance, glamor and impeccable quality - each pair of shoes is checked at least 120 times before leaving the factory floor. Now under the creative direction of Angelo Ruggeri, the dynamic SS14 collection is inspired by two overarching themes - the organic world and the kaleidoscope.
J. MENDEL
Under the creative directorship of Gilles Mendel, this fifth-generation French atelier gives Parisian-chic a contemporary spin. For SS14, the red-carpet favorite offers show-stopping gowns, weightless maxi skirts and precision-pieced patchwork lace all made with the label's signature couture-like craftsmanship.
1205
Established by Central Saint Martins graduate and former Savile Row tailor Paula Gerbase, 1205 offers androgynous dressing to sartorially-savvy women. Staying true to its ethos of "quality, purity and restraint", the loose, menswear-inspired designs are cleanly crafted from high quality fabrics with an emphasis on traditional techniques.
VIRZI + DE LUCA
Virzi + De Luca's bold approach to jewelry has won the Rio de Janeiro-based brand a strong A-list following. Its fantastical new collection draws inspiration from Tahiti, resulting in standout creations inspired by the underwater world.
SACAI
Following an eight-year stint at Comme des Garçons, Chitose Abe launched Japanese label Sacai in 1999. Taking inspiration from her surroundings and everyday life, Abe uses innovative fabric combinations and pattern techniques, merging them with sports and menswear influences to put a fresh spin on classic designs.
BLK DNM
Swedish-born Johan Lindeberg is the founder of this New York-based label, which blends downtown edge and Parisian-chic to seriously hip effect. The label offers an impressive line-up of "perfected classics", like luxe biker jackets, expert-fit denim and precision-cut tailoring.
