Rencontres d'Arles 2026: the image as a territory of freedom

Every summer, Arles becomes the gravitational center of the photography world. For its 57th edition, Les Rencontres d'Arles invites us to shift our perspective and cross geographical, aesthetic, and mental boundaries. More than just a festival, it is a journey in which images recount the world's transformations and reveal new ways of seeing.
This shift in perspective permeates the entire program. Les Rencontres pays tribute to William Klein on the centenary of his birth, celebrating an artist who constantly upended the conventions of photography, fashion, and photojournalism through a body of work defined by unparalleled freedom.

The 2026 edition also spotlights major artists whose visions have shaped the history of the medium. The powerful work of Martine Barrat delves into the social realities of Paris's Goutte d'Or district, as well as Harlem and the Bronx in the 1970s, offering a deeply human testimony. American photographer Ming Smith-the first Black woman to join the prestigious Kamoinge collective-unveils a poetic vision in which light, movement, and emotion redefine the contours of contemporary photography. Meanwhile, Harry Gruyaert, an undisputed master of color, takes visitors on a visual journey spanning New York, Paris, Tokyo, Mumbai, and Zanzibar, where every composition reveals a luminous geometry of remarkable precision.
The Mediterranean plays a pivotal role in this edition. Exploring themes of memory, migration, and identity, the works of Bruno Boudjelal, Anne-Lise Broyer, and Katia Kameli-brought together as part of the 2026 Mediterranean Season-examine territories as spaces of both transit and memory. Far from mere documentary work, their photographs give substance to intimate narratives, invisible legacies, and landscapes shaped by personal and collective histories.
Africa also emerges as a realm of creativity and reappropriation. From the *Ghana!* exhibition-which traces the country's visual history from Paul Strand to James Barnor while opening a dialogue with the younger generation represented by Carlos Idun-Tawiah (creator of the official poster for this 57th edition)-to the works of Paul Kodjo in Côte d'Ivoire, photography becomes a language of emancipation. Through the work of Sammy Baloji, the medium interrogates colonial legacies, buried memories, and the contemporary consequences of extractivism, blending archives, history, and creative expression.

This edition also places the living world at the heart of its inquiry. Inspired by the ideas of philosopher Achille Mbembe, the festival examines our relationship with other species and ecosystems. The *Modèle animal* (Animal Model) exhibition spans nearly two centuries of photographic history, revealing the central role animals have always played in the photographer's imagination. Whether scientific specimen, companion, symbol, or artistic subject, the animal here becomes a mirror reflecting our own humanity.
In Arles, images are never merely objects of contemplation. They spark conversations, challenge certainties, and invite us to rethink our relationship with the world. Bathed in the unique light of Provence-amidst a blend of ancient heritage and contemporary creation-the 2026 Rencontres d'Arles reaffirms its role as an international artistic laboratory, where every exhibition invites a journey of reflection and emotion.
