In a landmark event nearly five centuries in the making, Pope Leo XIV arrived in the glittering Mediterranean principality of Monaco today, becoming the first pontiff to visit since Pope Paul III in 1538. The one-day Apostolic Journey blended spiritual encouragement, diplomatic warmth, and a pointed message about using influence and resources for the common good in a world marked by inequality and conflict.
The 70-year-old Chicago-born pontiff, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the Order of Saint Augustine, departed from the Vatican heliport early Saturday morning. His helicopter touched down in Monaco shortly after, where he was warmly received by Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene at the heliport with full honors. The short but packed itinerary-lasting just under nine hours-highlighted the unique role small states can play on the global stage, a theme the Vatican had emphasized in announcing the trip.
The day began with a courtesy visit to the Prince's Palace in Monaco-Ville. Pope Leo XIV met privately with the princely family before appearing on the Gallery of Hercules balcony alongside Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, waving to crowds gathered below. The encounter underscored the strong ties between the Holy See and the Grimaldi family, with the Pope expressing gratitude for Monaco's longstanding Catholic heritage and its commitment to humanitarian causes.
Next, the Holy Father made his way to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for an encounter with the local Catholic community. In this intimate setting, he encouraged the faithful to live their baptismal calling with joy and coherence, especially in a cosmopolitan environment where material success often takes center stage. Archbishop Dominique-Marie David, who leads the Archdiocese of Monaco, welcomed the Pope and highlighted the vibrant yet challenged life of the Church in the principality.
A particularly energetic moment unfolded in the square in front of Saint Devota Church, Monaco's patroness. There, Pope Leo XIV greeted young people and catechumens, engaging in a lively dialogue about faith in the modern world. He urged the youth not to be swayed by superficial glamour but to build lives rooted in solidarity, environmental care, and genuine human relationships-values he has often emphasized since his election in May 2025.
The visit culminated in a grand celebration of Holy Mass at Louis II Stadium. Before the liturgy, the Pope toured among the faithful in an open vehicle, eliciting enthusiastic cheers from thousands who filled the stands. In his homily, Pope Leo XIV delivered a clear and challenging message tailored to his affluent audience. The visit, though brief, was widely seen as a success. Prince Albert II praised the Pope's "profound humanity and clear vision," while local Catholics expressed renewed enthusiasm for their faith. For many observers, the journey also served as a symbolic reminder that even the smallest nations can contribute meaningfully to the Church's universal mission.
