As Nice prepares to host the 3rd United Nations Conference on the Ocean next June, with more than 120 heads of state and 20,000 delegates present on site, the City of Nice and the Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis have scheduled a series of events throughout the year that will mobilize civil society actors.
Cultural, marine, educational, associative and scientific worlds... the Year of the Sea 2025 in Nice is a major popular event that aims to allow a better understanding of the Ocean and its necessary protection, among as many people as possible. The Year of the Sea is structured in 3 parts:
The University of the Ocean, with a multidisciplinary program of nearly 100 conferences and meetings open to all that give pride of place to the dialogue between the arts and sciences, and decipher the interactions between Man and the Ocean.
The Biennale of Arts and the Ocean "The Sea Around Us", in reference to Rachel Carson, American marine biologist, pioneer of ecology, with 11 exhibitions, 1 work tour in the public space and an associated program.
The Blue Program, a wide spectrum of events in the colors of the Ocean that will punctuate the daily life of the people of Nice: exhibitions, screenings, festivals, readings, workshops, performances, concerts, etc.
To feed this program, the City of Nice and the Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis have relied on local stakeholders. The call for expressions of interest "The Year of the Sea in Nice", launched in spring 2024 for cultural stakeholders, selected 18 projects for a budget of nearly €200,000, while the "Antoine Risso" Call for Projects, which aims to support local projects to preserve the biodiversity of the Ocean, selected 33 projects for a budget of €150,000.
