17th edition of the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival

2023 marks the 17th edition of the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival orchestrated by the Artistic Direction of Monte-Carlo SBM and programmed in collaboration with Reno Di Matteo.
From November 17 to December 2, the Festival offers intimate concerts at the Opéra Garnier Monte-Carlo: we will hear Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd, Jan Garbarek, Macy Gray, Jeanne Added and after the success of its Master Class at the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo last year, Alex Jaffray will host "Le Son d'Alex" on the stage of the Opéra Garnier.

But also Pianoforte (Baptiste Trotignon, Bojan Z, Eric Legnini, Pierre de Bethmann), Kareen Guiock Thuram, Keziah Jones, Incognito, Thomas de Pourquery, Léon Phal and Dominique Fils-Aimé!
Founded in 2006 by Jean-René Palacio, the Festival also owes its identity to its sponsors: Marcus Miller and Ibrahim Maalouf, who will not miss this 17th edition.

In addition to these jazz legends and aficionados, the MCJF offers a special jazz film program with the screening of the film Bird by Clint Eastwood in partnership with the Monaco Audiovisual Institute. Also, the new generations of musicians from the Rainier III Academy will offer the Jazz & Modern Music concert and will be part of the project.

Since 2022, the highlights of the Before and After will see their resurrection in new places such as the Bar de la Rotonde of the Monte-Carlo Casino and will also occupy the Crystal Bar of the Hôtel Hermitage and the American Bar of the Hôtel de Paris.

JAZZ & CINEMA - BIRD BY CLINT EASTWOOD

After the death of his granddaughter, Charlie "Bird" Parker, a famous black jazz saxophonist, attempted suicide. His white wife, Chan, places him in a psychiatric emergency department but refuses to request his internment: a creator has the right to an "extraordinary" life. From this situation, various intertwined flashbacks evoke the life of Parker, who raised the saxophone to its highest level of expression and influenced his entire generation, but whose private life was a daily hell.

Ron Carter

Nobody sounds like Ron Carter. An obvious tone, strings that vibrate noticeably to create the longest jazz notes that seem to dance in weightlessness... While his double bass produces a lively groove similar to an electric bass, Payton Crossley resonates his cymbals , Jimmy Green his tenor saxophone and pianist Renee Rosnes, his chorus. This is the recipe of the Foursight Quartet. "This is precisely why every concert is a real challenge. We almost always play 35 to 40 minutes without stopping. No breaks, just slight changes that indicate the start of a new title. If we were a classical music group, it would be called a symphony in five movements. That kind of thing only works with this group! The phrases are called "Cominando", a crackling hardbop structure that transports the spirit of the 1960s to the 21st century in the space of a few measures".

RAINIER III ACADEMY CONCERT

The Rainier III Academy is very honored to be invited once again as part of the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival in order to perpetuate the trends of Jazz in the Principality. This evening will feature young talents from the Jazz and Current Music department of the institution. The diverse program will range from Jazz to pop music through revisited standards.
