La Malmaison Contemporary Art Center Unveils Major Expansion in Cannes
The prestigious La Malmaison Contemporary Art Center in Cannes has emerged from an ambitious two-year renovation project, marking its grand reopening with a ceremonial inauguration on January 31, 2025. The extensive rehabilitation has transformed the heritage building into a world-class contemporary art venue, tripling its exhibition space while carefully preserving its historic character.
The newly expanded center now boasts 600 square meters of exhibition space, positioning it to host major international collections and prestigious art loans. The renovation project demonstrates Cannes' commitment to strengthening its cultural footprint on the global stage.
David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes, emphasized the significance of the project: "La Malmaison is the symbol of the cultural ambition of the Cannes City Hall. We have redesigned the spaces to triple the exhibition space, embellished the facade while respecting the identity of this characterful site, and opened a roof terrace that offers a breathtaking view of the bay."
The renovation has introduced several notable improvements to enhance the visitor experience. Administrative offices previously occupying the building have been relocated to République, allowing the entire space to be dedicated to public use. The center now features a multimodal room, a specialized bookstore, and a panoramic terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. Importantly, the facility has been made fully accessible to people with reduced mobility.
A key focus of the renovation was to support educational initiatives. The center now includes a dedicated mediation space for schoolchildren, underlining the city's commitment to Artistic and Cultural Education as a priority.
For its inaugural exhibition, La Malmaison presents "Luxury, Calm and Voluptuousness," running until April 20, 2025. The exhibition showcases works from 56 artists who drew inspiration from the Mediterranean, featuring masterpieces by renowned artists including Cézanne, Monet, Renoir, Picasso, and Combas.
Mayor Lisnard highlighted the broader impact of the renovation: "This is a major mandate project that we are making a reality. It touches on art and culture, pillars of the social man, and will contribute to strengthening tourism and the elegance of Cannes, thus making our city shine internationally."
The reopening of La Malmaison represents a significant milestone in Cannes' cultural development, promising to attract art enthusiasts and tourists while enriching the city's artistic landscape with three major exhibitions planned annually.
