During the Cannes Film Festival I had the chance to meet and interview Li Chen, one of the most known artists in the world, known for his voluminous sculptures that mixes traditional and modern style.
Li Chen talks about human condition within his art in a playful manner and a sort of wisdom drawn from the Taoist and Buddhist philosophy. Among his main pieces of art there is Sow Wonderland that represents the idea of an inner travel to life and universe, Floating Heavenly Palace that shows the idea of finding the true values within the actual society and finding yourself within it. Also, Float to Sukhavati is exhibited at the Festival of Cannes and is an invitation for the viewers to contemplate the nature and relax in its beauty by the idea of detachment, physically and spiritually. I invite you to read the interview with the artist and get to know his works of art!
AO: It's your first time here on the French Riviera?
Li Chen: On the French Riviera is the first time but in 2013 I was in France at the Place Vendome ... this is the second time that I am meeting the French public.
AO: What is your inspiration from your work, your style?
Li Chen: My inspirations comes from different arenas, it can be the daily life, it can be the nature, it can be spiritual ...
AO: Sculptures represent the only type of art you are creating?
Li Chen: Mainly I'm doing sculptures ...
AO: And what's the symbol behind the big volume sculptures?
Li Chen: Well, it's a contradiction. Even though the volume is big, to me this is very light.
AO: Where are your works exhibited in the world?
Li Chen: In many different countries: Taipei, Beijing, Singapore, Venice. For Venice I was for the 50th edition of the Biennale. There are so many; some of them are exhibitions ... I also did it in New York,
AO: So the Asian market is different from the others?
Li Chen: For me, I don't see the difference between Asia and other countries. My works carry out an international message.
AO: Do you intent to exhibit here on the French Riviera?
Li Chen: If there is a good location and good opportunity, this is certainly a wish for any artist.
AO: Because we are at the Festival of Cannes, what is your favorite or favorites among the competitors for the Palme d'Or?
Li Chen: I cannot say which one I like the best because I was invited without knowing and I hadn't got any time to see any film. And because I don't speak a foreign language it is quite difficult for me to capture what is what.
Thank you!
