The "Festin des courgourdons" takes its name from the market which was held on the church square in front of the Cimiez monastery. "Cougourdon" is the Nice name given to the fruit of a plant in the Cucurbitaceae family. This inedible vegetable, introduced into our region in the 16th century, was very quickly adopted by the people of Nice for its own qualities: waterproof after being drained and dried in the sun, it is often used as a kitchen utensil (bowls, spoons, gourds, shady...). Its original shapes also inspire art artisans! Often painted, the cougourdon is also engraved with geometric patterns or interlacing giving it an aesthetic and decorative dimension. These vegetables can become decorative elements or even lighting! Musicians also detect strong musical potential in this atypical vegetable. It continues to inspire musicians and artists from Nice who perpetuate and revisit the cougourdon tradition.
The City of Nice celebrates the arrival of spring with joy and in the purest traditions with the Cougourdon Festival in the shade of the olive trees of the Cimiez garden!
On the program for this Sunday, March 24, 2024: entertainment, folk dances, traditional singing, balèti but also something new this year: eco-cougourdon! The principle is simple. The "Recyclage sans Frontière" association offers a plastic recycling workshop to make cougourdon-shaped key rings. All you need to do is bring your corks!
