The exhibition called Free As A Bird of the artist Trondur Patursson emerges us into the love for the ocean. It will be exposed between September 25th-October 30th 2018

ARTIST Tróndur Patursson, much of whose work was inspired by ships and the sea, is the star of a new art exhibition inaugurated on the eve of the Monaco Yacht Show.

Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson is considered one of the most influential artists from the Faroe Islands, an archipelago of 18 mountainous islands situated between Scotland and Iceland in the North-East Atlantic.

The artist, whose paintings and iconic glass sculptures are often inspired by a nautical theme, is being honoured in a timely exhibition at Galerie Birch Monaco. The exhibition opened to rave reviews from a packed audience on the eve of the Monaco Yacht Show, on Tuesday September 25th.

Anette Birch, owner of Galerie Birch Monaco and a long-time admirer of Tróndur Patursson's work, said: "We were delighted to welcome so many interested and interesting people to the opening night of this wonderful exhibition.

"Nature, most of all the ocean, is Tróndur's most important source of inspiration. On the Faroe Islands, where the artist lives and works, we find nature in its most unspoiled form.

"The monochrome, abstract expressionist canvases clearly speak about the wild Faroese landscape, that being in the earthy colours of the rock or the sea and sky depicted in a vivid intense aquamarine hue."

She added: "It seems befitting that we should pay homage to Tróndur during the Monaco Yacht Show, one of the world's most important nautical exhibitions - and the second largest event to be held every year in the Principality.

"We hope that his work will appeal to visitors who come from all over the globe to view the superyachts moored in the port below the gallery."

Tróndur Patursson celebrates a long row of museum shows and is the recipient of many prestigious awards, such as The Faroe Island Cultural Award, which he received in 2014. In Copenhagen airport, many recognize his glass bird sculptures, suspended from the ceiling by Gate D. Their transparency conveys lightness and a feeling of going on a journey or the feeling of coming back home.

The artist's relationship with Anette, who opened Galerie Birch in in Monaco-Ville last June, dates back to the late 1980s when her art dealer father Borge Birch first became acquainted with Tróndur Patursson's work.

Birch was intrigued by the way that Tróndur Patursson chose to work with glass and collaborated closely with the Faroese artist in Galerie Birch Copenhagen, the gallery he founded in 1946 that his daughter Anette now also runs.

The exhibition runs until October 30th at Galerie Birch Monaco, 17 rue Basse, Monaco-Ville.

The gallery is open from 11am-1pm and 2.30-6pm on Tuesday - Friday and 11am - 3pm on Saturday.
