During the Cannes Film Festival, Clouds of Sils Maria was presented as a competition film among 18 others. In the main roles Juliette Binoche, Chloe Grace Moretz, Kristen Stewart.
In the film we can see pieces of clothing or jewelry signed by Chanel. The brand contributed to the financement of the film by providing clothes, jewels, make-up, accessories but also the budget to make the film on a 35 mm rather than go digitally.
"They turned to us because there was that bond. So we didn't start off saying we are going to finance it, because our contribution anyway is quite small. That wasn't the point. But we helped to make it possible for the film to be released in the way they wanted it to be done," Bruno Pavlovski, the President of Chanel declared.
Chanel is very fond to cinema since 1931 when Gabrielle Chanel was first invited to Hollywood. After this, the designer created costumes for films and actresses like Gloria Swanson, then earlier to Jeanne Moreau or Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine.
For Clouds of Sils Maria, Bruno Pavlovski declares that: "I had only a few scenes in which to establish the main character of Marie Enders - an international actress - and her iconic status, including the extent of how that sometimes weighs on her. Linking her with a house like Chanel very early on in the story was an obvious shortcut. It speaks of a kind of glamor and exactitude that we identify with a French woman and her global influence."
