Rotterdam is bubbling with art during Rotterdam Art Week. In this first week of February, the entire city of Rotterdam is a celebration of culture and contemporary art. Visitors will be treated to a wide variety of art fairs, local street fairs, pop-up shows, open studios and special museum exhibitions.
Art Rotterdam is an international art fair taking place from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 February in the Cruise Terminal. Founded in 2000, Art Rotterdam has developed into an internationally renowned platform for contemporary art. The fair will present more than ninety established and emerging galleries from the Netherlands and abroad, showcasing the latest developments in contemporary art.
This year Art Rotterdam also will be introducing a special section for film and video. Art Rotterdam Projections takes place in the building LP2 opposite the Cruise terminal. Nowadays more and more artists work with video to shape their ideas. In museums and at biennials video and film are an important part of the presented art. At Art Rotterdam Projections approximately 20 galleries present a video work of an upcoming or more renowned artist in an open and interactive setting.
In the same week, the Kunsthal will be presenting the exhibition ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk' (10 February - 12 May). Gaultier has shaped the look of fashion over the last 35 years with his avant-garde creations and cutting-edge designs. The first international exhibition of this celebrated and famed French couturier's work provides a spectacular overview of his extensive oeuvre. Rotterdam is the only European city that is showcasing the retrospective completely.
